Latour en Dooyeweerd (Dutch)

Nieuw artikel, verschenen in Denkwijzer (en in Soφie)

The Crossings of Technology with Ethics, Politics, and Religion: On Latour and Dooyeweerd. (new article in Dutch)

Bruno Latour is known for the actor-network theory, but quite surprisingly, his recent An Inquiry Into Modes of Existence (2013) is all about values, including religion. Latour even states that his researches into technology developed from his interest in theology and biblical exegese when he was "a militant catholic student" ("Biography of an inquiry". Social Studies of Science, 43(2)). Latour's notion of "modes of existence" very much resembles a central theme in the work of Dutch philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd, namely of the modes of being (or modal aspects, or law spheres) (A New Critique of Theorethical Thought). Even more remarkable is that the number of modes is in both cases fifteen. Hence this comparison of both thinkers, with a special focus on technology and culture.
